Tens or Better and Two Pairs or Better Machines

Tens or Better

The Tens or Better machines, which are more rare now, are the same as Jacks or Better except that the minimum winning hand for a payout is a pair of 10's. While there are more frequent payouts with a Tens or Better machine, the payout schedule has been adjusted to compensate. Some Tens or Better machines have good payouts, but the majority of them do not, accounting for the fading popularity of this variation.

The 6-5 10's or Better variation shown here has a payback of 99.1% with proper play. That's not too bad and is certainly playable. However, beware of 10's or Better machines that pay more on the full houses and flushes but reduce the two pair payout to just 1 coin played as opposed to 2. That can reduce the payout by as much as 10% or more.

Two Pairs or Better

Again, this is not a common machine, and it is not to be confused with the joker wild: two pair game, but it can be found from time to time. The minimum winning hand is two pair. A pair of tens or jacks doesn't cut the mustard in this game, nor do aces. You need at least two pair or better to qualify for a return.

Not being able to win on any single pair greatly reduces the frequency of winning, and this is compensated by higher payouts on the winning hands you do hit. Some of the payouts will get you close to a 98% return with proper strategy, which is not bad, but many machines featuring poorer payout schedules drop you many points below that level and are not good machines to play if you're trying to win.

The following pay tables shows you one of each, with the first one, the 8-6 variety being the much more favorable one at about a 98% payback. The second machine reduces the overall payback to only 93.5% and should be avoided like the plague.
